Just around the corner from the Pantone Hotel, near the Louizalaan, Sale Pepe Rosmarino is an excellent small Italian restaurant. We’ve been there a few times, and have being knocked out by plates like hand-made mezze lune with lemon and sage or scallops with fresh shaved truffle.
They have a standard menu, but seemingly everyone orders off the daily specials board, which features starters, pastas, and meat/fish dishes. Wines have been excellent. Two courses and wine will run around €60 per person.
It’s not big, and reservations are definitely recommended. They don’t even have a website. Just a phone: 02-538.90.63.

So the Pantone-colored coffee mugs were cool in a nerdy kind of way, but we were a little skeptical about the extension of the Pantone brand into a hotel. At Brussels’ Pantone Hotel, however, it works. Not far from the Louizalaan, and just a couple of stops on the subway from Brussel Zuid/Midi train station, …
After a few days of self-catering at the fairly grim supermarkets of Ruka, we began to ask ourselves where the local produce was. As a ski resort, and a base for setting off on the Karhunkierros Trail, it just seemed like the kind of town that had to have a farmer’s market of some sort.
Then, walking into town from our cabin, we stumbled right across it, the Landemarket, a couple of buildings down from the gas station/supermarket, and a highlight of our trip to Ruka. The young and very friendly owners had just opened the doors three weeks earlier, and were still labeling bottles and building up the assortment, but what was on hand was already exciting.
The home-made wild blueberry jam is excellent – not too sweet, and you could literally taste the forest in it. I wish we’d bought more. The selection also includes mustards and other sauces made in-house, as well as smoked fish, reindeer, and a cheese made from the milk of a rare local breed of cow that can cope with winters on the Arctic Circle, and has recently been brought back from the brink of extinction. Ask to see the photos. While browsing, you can also have a cup of locally roasted coffee, and baked treats.

The fact that the Apex London Wall Hotel is tucked away on a backstreet between St. Pancras and Bank means that weekends in the immediate vicinity are quiet, but you’re only 10 minutes’ walk from Spitalfields Market, and a bit further to Brick Lane. What you get as the tradeoff for a few minutes’ walk …

Credit where due, we were tipped off to the Rockwell by Tablet Hotels, whose budget recommendations can be some of the best deals going. At under £100 in London territory, the price/quality ratio can be pretty poor, so the Rockwell was a great surprise. It offers comfortable rooms best described as ‘warm minimalist’ – creme …

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better location than the Morrison‘s, right on the Liffey and just a few doors down from The Winding Stair, one of our favorite restaurants. Staff are quite helpful and friendly, and they do lay out an impressive breakfast. One of the first ‘design’ hotels in Dublin, the overall minimalist …

Concierge Boutique Bungalows is just one of the coolest, best-designed hotels we’ve ever stayed in. Located in easy walking distance to the restaurants on Florida Road, they make an unlikely set of buildings in an unlikely location into something really special. The hotel is comprised of a group of heritage buildings, tucked away off …

Hai.Bo made us break the ‘don’t go back to the same place’ rule during our recent trip to Durban three times. Some very smart people are making some excellent food and cocktails here. Some are twists on local standards, like the mini bunny chows. Others, like the ‘Indian Nachos’ – which at first glance seem …
