Fontana Park Hotel, Lisbon, Portugal

One of the many benefits of Lisbon’s inexpensive taxis is that they make staying at slightly out-of-the center hotels like the Fontana Park Hotel a viable option. The Fontana Park is more than viable – it’s stylish, comfortable and the very reasonable rates – at times well under €100 per night, make it worth a ten minute/10 euro taxi fare to the historic center.

Views from the rooms may be nothing special, but the rooms themselves are a minimalist respite from the summer heat. The bar has shaded outdoor seating that makes clever and effective use of what must have been a challenging space, transforming it into a hidden garden, ideal for a late-night drink and snack.
